The Toronto Raptors have had a miserable season with a 25-57 record and they won’t even be able to take advantage of a good draft pick to make up for their lack of success.
Toronto, which had the sixth best odds of winning the NBA lottery on Sunday, saw its pick slip to eighth. This slide therefore confirms that the Raptors will send their 2024 first-round pick to the San Antonio Spurs, to complete the trade that brought Jakob Poeltl to Canada.
In addition to giving away Khem Birch as well as second-round picks in 2023 and 2025, the Raptors agreed to send their 2024 first-round pick to the Spurs.
The Raptors, however, added a clause to protect their choice, so that if he ended up among the six best selections, Toronto would keep this choice. Sunday’s lottery, however, did not work in the Raptors’ favor.
The Raptors still hold picks No. 19 (from the Pacers) as well as 31 (from the Pistons) for the draft.
It was the Atlanta Hawks who won the very first pick for the 2024 auction, who only had a 3% chance of winning the first pick. By comparison, Toronto had a 9% chance of winning the lottery.
The Pistons, who had the best chance of winning the lottery, will instead draft fifth overall. This is the second year in a row that they have slipped to the fifth-best selection, even though they have the best chance of winning the lottery.
The NBA draft will take place on June 27.
