Thiago Silva will permanently return to Fluminense, the Brazilian top club has announced. The central defender, who has an expiring contract with Chelsea, enjoyed part of his youth training at the club from Rio de Janeiro.

As a big surprise, the news of Silva’s return to Fluminense does not come. In recent weeks it was announced that the man-decker would almost certainly return to his native country. Last week, Chelsea pre-empted his departure with a farewell interview.

The 113-time Brazilian international joined Chelsea in the summer of 2020 after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired. In his debut season, the Blues immediately won the Champions League.

However, things have been going downhill for Chelsea for the past two seasons, and Silva cannot escape the malaise. With the Brazilian as a regular starter, Mauricio Pochettino’s team is currently seventh in the Premier League.

Silva was voted Player of the Year at Chelsea last season. In total he made 151 official appearances. Next season he will wear the club colors of Fluminense, for which he played as a youth player and between 2006 and 2008.

People also want to know that the Brazilian is back in his own country. “The monster is back,” headlines Fluminense on the club website. The defender has signed a contract for two seasons and will play with shirt number 3.

Silva is expected to arrive in Rio de Janeiro to join his new teammates in about a month’s time, when his contract with Chelsea has expired. The defender can only play official matches from July 10, when the transfer market opens.

Silva successfully completed the youth academy of Fluminense, where he played from the age of eleven to eighteen. After trips to various clubs, he returned to the club between 2006 and 2008 for his debut in the main squad.

During that period he won the Copa do Brasil (2007) and helped Fluminense to the final of the 2008 Copa Libertadores, winning 3-1 against LDU Quito. Silva has 97 games and 9 goals for Tricolor.
