The Search for FC Bayern’s New Coach Takes on Satirical Traits as Eberl Faces Challenges

Since it became clear that FC Bayern will not be going with Thomas Tuchel next season and needs a new coach, the search for the 50-year-old’s successor has sometimes taken on real-satirical traits.

At the end of February, the record champions announced Tuchel’s departure before new sports director Max Eberl started his job in Munich a week later.

Eberl’s plan was to find a new trainer for 2024/25 as quickly as possible, but as is well known, the former Gladbach manager received one rejection after another.

Eberl: “I know it a little differently”

“We said that we actually wanted to be finished in April. If it takes until May, then until May. Now we are in the middle of May, and of course it annoys us that it hasn’t worked out the way we imagined,” said Eberl after Bayern’s 2-0 win against Wolfsburg.

Eberl then launched into a remarkable criticism and obviously addressed it to Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick – but without mentioning their names.

The search for a coach is “always accompanied, not only by you (the press representatives, d. R.), but also by the opposing party, who sometimes present themselves very offensively.”

As a reminder: During and after the negotiations with the German (Nagelsmann) and Austrian (Rangnick) national coach, voices from the protagonists themselves or their advisors repeatedly made their way to the public – much to the displeasure of the Bayern boss.

“I know it a little differently, normally you talk behind closed doors, then you either agree or not and part ways,” said Eberl. “But it’s not like that, that doesn’t make it any easier.”

Eberl: “I won’t comment on a single name”

Now it is the case that “we still have to try to find the best. We’re having conversations, not just with one person, and we want to try to find the new coach as quickly as possible.”

When asked whether former Bayern coach Hansi Flick was one of the candidates, Eberl – no surprise – did not back down from his principles.

“I think that’s the only thing that has remained steadfast – that I haven’t commented on any names, even when you’ve asked me about it, what’s your job and what’s legitimate. But I won’t comment on a single name until the ink is dry.”
