The Return of the Victoires du Sport: Honoring Reunionese Athletes in 2023

The Victoires du Sport are back. After a break of more than twenty years, the Reunionese sports awards ceremony was relaunched by the Cros. The evening will take place on May 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cité des Arts, in Saint-Denis. It will be broadcast on Réunion La 1re on May 25 and will reward Reunionese athletes who distinguished themselves during the year 2023, (Illustrative photo rb/www.ipreunion.com)

It was in the 2000s that, under the leadership of Guy-Michel Quintin, the Victoires du Sport were organized by the Cros (regional Olympic and sports committee) of Reunion. The former president of the Judo League was then a member of this sporting movement and the idea of rewarding Reunion’s sporting excellence gained ground, until it came to fruition, during an evening, where various awards would be presented.

The Champions of Champions Trophy, distinguishing the athlete of the year, constitutes the high point of the event. Several stars of Reunion sport will succeed one another on the list, including Jackson Richardson, Thierry Lincou, Bernard Inom, Daniel Narcisse, Jérémy Florès, before in 2011, the date of the last Victories, it was the triathlete David Hauss who won this prestigious prize.

A little over twenty years later, Cros decided to relaunch the event. “We wanted to put the spotlight back on the vitality of Reunionese sport, the exemplary nature of all those who make a lot of sacrifices to reach the top,” explains Claude Villendeuil, the president of Cros. Sport conveys great values in our society. It was important to be able to once again reward those who do it.”

The ceremony will therefore take place on May 17, from 7:30 p.m., at the Cité des Arts, with a broadcast of this evening on Réunion La Première, on May 25. Nine categories will compete with prior nominations in each of them and a final winner.

To draw up the list of these nominees, a jury was put together to study the merits of each for the year 2023. It brought together journalists from the world of sport, but also some expert members of the sports movement.

– The public and a jury vote for the Champion of Champions –

They then voted to designate the winners, from three selected applicants, in the following categories: women’s team, men’s team, PEI champion, PEI champion, parasport champion, parasport champion, youth champion, youth champion.
The ninth category is that of the Champion of Champions. For the premier category, the terms change a little. First it includes five nominees.

Then, the final vote is divided in two, equally: the jury’s vote will weigh 50%, that of the public will also weigh 50% (the voting arrangements can be read on victoriesdusport.re).

Very high-level athletes, qualified for the Olympic Games, of national or international scope, rub shoulders in this list of nominees with athletes or teams who have shone locally, or even in the Indian Ocean.

Supported in the organization by Ilop Sport, Cros wanted to cover the entire spectrum of Reunion sport. In this regard, three other trophies will be awarded to the male volunteer, the female volunteer and the club of the year 2023.

In addition to rewarding those who work in the shadows, a focus will be on the 2023 Island Games campaign, which took place in Madagascar, during the evening. Finally, musical and sporting events will serve as an interlude between the various awards ceremonies.
