The Race for Ligue 1 Survival: The Battle to Avoid Relegation Play-Offs

With just one day remaining in this Ligue 1 season, uncertainty reigns as several clubs fight to avoid the dreaded relegation play-offs in Ligue 2. One club, however, seems destined for sixteenth place.

Yesterday during the penultimate day of the championship, Clermont officially said goodbye to Ligue 1 after its defeat against Lyon (1-0). We long believed that it would be the same for Lorient after a heavy setback against OM (3-1) but Metz, however, in front of Strasbourg 10 minutes from the end of the match, collapsed (2-1). Concerning the sixteenth place synonymous with the play-offs, there are still three clubs left to fight.

Lorient, 17th with 26 points (goal average -28) will have a difficult task, three points behind Metz, currently 16th with 29 points and which has a better goal difference (goal average -21). Le Havre 15th with 32 points lost Friday against Nice (1-0), will have to be careful but seems safe there too with a comfortable goal difference (goal average -10).

In all likelihood, FC Metz will therefore be the club in the running for the Ligue1/Ligue2 play-off, unless PSG decides to make a final splash this season in Ligue 1. Yesterday PSG, for Mbappé’s last at the Parc des Princes lost (1-3) and no longer seems very concerned at the end of the championship.

The program of the teams battling for the place of play-off:

  • Metz – PSG
  • Lorient – Clermont
  • Le Havre – Marseille

As has been the protocol since the 2017-2018 season, the configuration of relegations in Ligue 1 remains unchanged this season with a play-off which will pit the 16th in Ligue 1 against the winner of a series of matches from the Ligue 2 championship which could be part of ASSE. Indeed, if the Greens can still climb directly into L1 thanks to a victory and a misstep by Angers during the last match of the season, there is a good chance that the gang at Dall’Oglio go through the play-offs box. A first meeting would await the Stéphanois against the winner of the confrontation between the 4th and 5th in the championship before potentially meeting the 16th in Ligue 1 in a back and forth duel.
