The Premier League’s Coaching Carousel: Chelsea’s Search for Pochettino’s Successor

The big bang at Chelsea FC also reverberates in the days after the announcement: the Premier League club surprisingly parted ways with its coach Mauricio Pochettino. Now the “Blues” have to find a successor.

The list of potential coaches that the club bosses are considering also includes names that are explosive from FC Bayern’s perspective.

According to various media reports, there are eight to nine coaches who are particularly interesting for Chelsea. According to the British Telegraph, one of them is Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß, who Bayern also considered as a possible successor to Tuchel, but who recently extended his contract with VfB by two years.

Bayern and Chelsea have Kompany on their list

Two other names are even more explosive: The Guardian claims to have learned that Vincent Kompany is also an interesting candidate for Chelsea FC. The Belgian is also a hot name at Bayern right now.

According to media reports, the Burnley coach, who used to be a world-class player at Manchester City, and Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl have even come to an agreement in principle. SPORT1 has also already reported on talks between Kompany and Bayern.

However, the supervisory board of the record champions with Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge still have to agree – so will Chelsea intervene?

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Kompany “still hasn’t received a call from Chelsea” as of Wednesday, meaning Bayern are ahead. Kompany has made a “positive impression” in the discussions so far and the club now wants to close the deal as soon as possible, Romano reported on Thursday.

Tuchel back to Chelsea?

Chelsea, on the other hand, according to Sky, could apparently also imagine a return of Thomas Tuchel, who is quitting at Bayern – and whom the club bosses were unable to persuade to stay at Säbener Straße any longer.

Tuchel was already coach of the “Blues” from January 2021 – and surprisingly won the Champions League with them in the same year. In September 2022, however, the 50-year-old was relatively surprisingly sacked after a defeat in the Champions League group stage.

The Mirror therefore wants to know for sure that there is no chance of Tuchel returning under the current management. The way he was sacked at the time left a bitter taste in his mouth, according to a report. The Chelsea bosses are also looking for a younger, up-and-coming head coach.

According to the Telegraph, the list of Chelsea’s two sporting directors, Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, also includes the names of Girona coach Míchel, Ipswich’s Kieran McKenna and Leicester’s Enzo Maresca. In addition, according to the Guardian, the Dane Thomas Frank, currently Brighton coach, is also on Chelsea’s list.

Roberto De Zerbi is the bookmakers’ favourite

At the bookmakers, however, Roberto De Zerbi is the favorite to succeed Pochettino. The 44-year-old Italian is leaving his previous club Brighton & Hove Albion at the end of the season. His name was also traded at Bayern for a time – until sports director Max Eberl put an end to the speculation.

The coaching question could also become explosive at Chelsea FC, as the club is now competing with Brighton for possible candidates in addition to Bayern.

It was surprisingly announced on Tuesday that Pochettino was leaving the “Blues”. The Argentinean had originally signed a two-year contract with the London club last summer – and experienced a long, crisis-ridden season with them.

At the end of the season, Chelsea FC changed and suddenly came into their own. The last five league games were all won and the club secured European business with sixth place in the Premier League.
