The Port of Santander and Volkswagen Navarra study how to jointly promote rail transport |

The president of the Port Authority of Santander, César Díaz, and the director of the port, Santiago Díaz Fraile, met in Landaben with the president of Volkswagen Navarra, Michael Hobusch, to find out what the brand’s future prospects are in the Port of Santander and explain to the company the important investments that the APS is making in new infrastructure and how these will affect vehicle traffic.

Díaz, who described the meeting as “very productive”, highlighted the “perfect harmony that both entities have regarding the need to continue promoting rail transport” with the aim of achieving “increasingly sustainable mobility and maximum possible emissions reduction.”

In this sense, it must be remembered that, in 2023, Volkswagen Navarra transported 51.9% of its vehicles by train and that, of them, 30% were destined for Santander (42,672 units). Last year, the company moved 110,438 units in total through the port of Santander (between imports and exports), which represents 32% of this traffic in the port infrastructure.

The brand’s objective is to move towards “zero environmental impact” in all its factories by 2050, a goal that, for the president of the APS, “is in total harmony” with the sustainability aspirations of the Port of Santander currently moves 13% of its vehicle traffic by rail. “A percentage that, although it represents one of the best ratios in rail port mode in the entire country, is clearly insufficient to obtain good results in environmental matters,” Díaz highlighted.

The president of the Port of Santander has highlighted that, although the APS is investing in railways with the renewal of its tracks and access to all terminals, it is necessary to improve, not only the infrastructure within the Port, but also “those that “They bring us closer to our hinterland.”

Thus, he has pointed out as “essential” actions such as better railway operation of the Muriedas terminal, the achievement of 750 meter sidings between Mata Porquera and Muriedas, the duplication of the Torrelavega-Muriedas section or “especially the railway terminal in La Pasiega”, since the Port of Santander “needs new logistical spaces to be able to grow.”

In this sense, Díaz explained to the president of Volkswagen Navarra the “important investments” that are being made in the Port to increase “the capacity of the facilities for vehicle traffic.” Thus, he has referred to such notable actions as the expansion of the automobile silo, which will triple the current space, or the recent commissioning of the Raos 9 dock, which means more docking lines for road traffic and has increased the logistics surface. .

The president of the port also recalled that the Cantabrian infrastructure has occupied first place this last year, for the ninth time, in the ranking prepared by the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (ANFAC). “A particularly positive distinction since it is the clients themselves who value the capabilities and good work of Spanish ports in their operations for this type of traffic,” he noted.
