The Path to Recovery: Colts Quarterback Anthony Richardson Returns from Shoulder Injury

Although there is still pain at times in his surgically repaired shoulder, the quarterback is on the path to returning from last year’s injury.

INDIANAPOLIS — The second-year quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts, Anthony Richardsonhas learned that the path back from a season-ending injury isn’t always linear.

“Some days, I feel great and then other days I wake up like, ‘Wow, my shoulder still hurts,'” he confessed. Richardson, who underwent surgery on his right shoulder last season. “But, every day, I work. When I finish rehab, or I’m in the gym with the weights, it’s like, ‘Okay, I’m back.’

“Because I remember a few months ago, I couldn’t even lift my arm.”

Now, Richardson is doing that and more.

The No. 4 overall pick in 2023 returned to full-squad duty this week for the first time since his injury, participating in the team’s first week of organized team activities. Colts. It represents a major step in the progression of the young quarterback, who appeared in just four games as a rookie last year.

Resuming his place as franchise quarterback was significant for Richardsonafter all the time wasted.

Richardson suffered an acromioclavicular joint injury in a Week 5 matchup against the Tennessee Titans last season, cutting short what looked like a promising rookie campaign. He spent the next three months watching from a distance, even as the rookie of the Houston Texans, C.J. Stroud –playing for one of the divisional rivals of the Colts in the AFC On— put the finishing touches on a prolific debut campaign that earned him the appointment of Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Those experiences only served to create a greater desire within Richardson to come back. Indianapolis faces Houston in Week 1 after a season-ending victory by the Texans that gave them a place in the playoffs and took out the Colts of the postseason fight.

“I’m always excited to play football, but my friend [Stroud]”He got the win at the end of last season, so I’m excited for our offense to get going this year against him,” he said. Richardson. “I’m just ready to see what’s going to happen.”

In the meantime, it’s all about working toward that day. Richardson, coaches say, was a diligent student throughout his time on injured reserve. And, he maintains that strategy in the spring, studying with the head coach Shane Steichen and his assistants to increase his command of an offensive that he could only execute for a short period in 2023.

“I’m more comfortable with the offense now,” he said. Richardson. “I have a year of experience. Not a year of playing time, but just being in meetings every day. Then, just studying. Getting here early in the morning for the meeting with Shanethat’s something I pride myself on, because I know the offense inside and out like Shane, then I think we will be unstoppable. “So I just have to keep perfecting it and just keep trusting myself and trusting the offense.”

Regarding how it has performed Richardson, had some moments of brilliance along with some less than perfect ones. A pass in traffic to the wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. During Wednesday’s session, open to the media, he was one of those who Richardson might want back.
