The Olympic flame will not pass through New Caledonia due to riots

New Caledonia will not see the Olympic flame on June 11. A decision announced by Prime Minister Gabriel Attal after a meeting in Matignon, according to BFMTV. This cancellation results from the political crisis that the archipelago has been experiencing since Tuesday May 14.

After the vote of deputies on Tuesday in favor of an expansion of the electoral body in New Caledonia, riots broke out on “Caillou” – nickname of the archipelago – causing the death of five people.

In this tense climate, the passing of the Olympic flame, which was planned in less than a month, was canceled by Matignon for security reasons, according to BFMTV. The Ministry of the Armed Forces indicated that the army was deployed as reinforcements in Nouméa.
