Will the NFL regular season be expanded to 18 games in the future? A star quarterback attaches conditions to this project.
NFL boss Roger Goodell recently publicly admitted that league officials are probably looking into restructuring the regular season.
It is possible to increase the number of games in the regular season from 17 to 18 games.
One of the first to publicly comment on this project was Joe Burrow. However, the Cincinnati Bengals’ star quarterback doesn’t necessarily want just one more game for each team.
Instead, he also advocates for another bye week to relieve the pressure on the teams and players.
“You could do it so that the existing bye week is maintained, but then another one is added later, where all teams pause at the same time,” Burrow said via “WLWT”.
His suggestion: The NFL could follow the example of the NBA.
“You could have Pro Bowl week there, like All-Star weekend in the NBA,” the signal caller advised. “People get paid a lot of money to discuss and make decisions about something like this. We’ll see what comes of it.”
Since 1951, the NBA has hosted its All-Star Game, which, along with other events, is traditionally scheduled for an entire weekend without any regular season games taking place at the same time.
In the NFL, this All-Star weekend – i.e. the Pro Bowl – always takes place in the post season, a week before the Super Bowl. It is therefore not a bye week as there are only two teams left in the race at this point.
Burrow: “18 games are a challenge”
“Eighteen games is definitely a big challenge,” Burrow explained. “It’s not easy. An extra game would obviously be great for revenue. But I feel like with an 18-game season, the bye week would be very important for our bodies.”
Burrow explains that the number of games without a break is a big problem.
“If you keep the first non-game week – some teams have the first non-game weekend in week five or six – and then play 12, 13 games in a row? That’s not easy. There’s probably a Thursday night game on top of that. That’s never easy. This one So both byes would be pretty important.”
