Former rugby stars and foreign journalists were deeply affected by the Toulouse scrum-half’s masterful performance against Leinster.

Stade Toulousain won their sixth Champions Cup title on Saturday, dominating Leinster after an epic battle. And during this game of rare intensity, Antoine Dupont was phenomenal, monstrous, both in his impeccable handling of the game and his defensive omnipresence.

In such a tour de force, several former glories of the oval ball were rave about the captain of Stade Toulousain and the XV of France. “An unreal match. Dupont is on another level,” thus greeted Matt Giteau, the former Wallaby who successfully passed through RC Toulon. For Liam Williams, the former Welsh full-back, the Toulouse number 9 is simply “the best in the world”illustrating his point with the emoji of a crown.

“It would take a whole day to compile a compilation of his best actions”

His compatriot, former flanker Sam Warburton, focused on the defensive performance “phenomenal” by Jack Willis. Even if he has to admit it: “He would have been my man of the match, if it hadn’t been for Antoine Dupont…» Same praise from former French hooker Benjamin Kayser, now a consultant for British TV: “It would take a whole day to make a compilation of his best actions.” And to add: “He did everything today (SATURDAY), the rucks, the animation, he chases the attack line like no one else.

Foreign journalists were also impressed by the performance of the man who was voted best European player of the 2023-2024 season. In particular our eminent Irish colleague Murray Kinsella : “Antoine Dupont is truly the best rugby player I have seen in my life. And he’s only 27… He’s coming of age!” Daniel Schofield writes, with a fiery pen, in the columns of Telegraph what “Dupont is changing his sport as Cruyff and Federer did”. And to add: “You will be able to tell your children and grandchildren that you had the privilege of seeing the Little General of Toulouse play…”
