Kaspars Daugavinas scored the winning goal in overtime. Rodrigo Ābols and Roberts Bukarts scored goals for Latvia in regular time.
The Latvians ended the first third with a deficit of one goal and the result did not change in the second period. In the last third, Abols achieved a draw, Bukarts put Latvia in the lead, which was not enough for the victory in regular time.

Overtime was already nearing its end, when Daugavins got to the puck after a mistake by France and scored the winning goal one second before the final whistle.
Five minutes before the end of the first third until the end of the match, the referees sent off Oskars Batnia, seeing that the Latvian forward poked the opponent with a stick.
The French reveal the result
In addition, during the imposed five-minute suspension, the French opened the score – the puck sent by Stefana da Costa hit a player and entered the goal guarded by Elvya Merzlikin. At that time, the Latvian national team played in three against five.
The French had several good chances in the second third, but Merzlikin worked flawlessly in goal. The Latvians also attacked a lot, but remained empty, even playing in the majority twice.
Rodrigo Abols equalizes
However, at the beginning of the last third, the Latvian national team took revenge – after Ralfs Freiberg’s strong pass in front of the goal, Ābols scored.
In the middle of the third period, the Latvian national team got the opportunity to play in the majority for five minutes, because Igo Gale was dismissed for elbowing Jānis Jakas until the end of the game. This time, the Latvians did not miss their opportunities – after Kaspars Daugavins shot, the puck bounced off the goal post and Roberts Bukarts scored a goal.
The French managed to equalize three minutes before the end of regular time after a throw-in. Pierre Edouard-Belmare sent the rebounded puck in front of Merzlikin’s goal into the net.

The four strongest teams in the group will advance to the quarterfinals. The medal winners of the championship in the Czech Republic will be announced at the finals in Prague on May 26.
