The Future of the Phoenix Suns: Keeping the Big Three Intact After Playoff Humiliation

After the humiliation of the first round of the Playoffs (sweep against the Wolves), we inevitably wonder what the consequences will be on the Phoenix Suns squad and the coaching staff. Several rumors notably involving stars Devin Booker and Kevin Durant were quick to invade social networks and other podcasts, but the Arizona franchise would rather be with the aim of leaving the Big Three intact for next season.

If you’ve wandered around Twitter a bit in recent days, you couldn’t have missed the rumors in question. Devin Booker wants to go to the Knicks ? What are the potential destinations for Kevin Durant if he gets traded? This is what we have seen on the networks since the elimination of the Suns 4-0 against the Wolves in the first round of the 2024 Playoffs.

But if we are to believe the insider of The Athletic Shams Charania, the Suns have no plans to break up their trio despite this year’s fiasco, and believe the trio can still take Phoenix to the top.

The sense is the Suns will run it back with their star trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal next season, per @ShamsCharania on @PatMcAfeeShow.

In response to rumors of a potential trade of Devin Booker to the Knicks, rumor started by a certain Stephen A. Smith on the set ofESPN, Phoenix journalist Gerald Bourguet assured that Book had no intention of leaving Phoenix. As for Kevin Durant, who went from Golden State to Brooklyn then from Brooklyn to Phoenix in the space of just four years, he himself asked to join the Suns to play with his friend Booker. The third member of the Big Three, Bradley Beal, has the possibility of preventing any transfer (thanks to his no-trade clause) and the Suns are handcuffed with him. Bealou also said after the Suns’ elimination that the franchise “has time” to achieve its goals.

“It’s not a one-year project, we didn’t think we only had one year to succeed. No, we have time. We have a shooting window. Yes, it’s small, but we have a shooting window, and we want to maximize it as much as possible.”

Given the enormous resources used to create this Big Three, and the ambitions of new owner Mat Ishbia, continuing with the Booker – Durant – Beal trio seems to be the most logical scenario. Is this best for the future of the franchise? That’s another story.

If the Phoenix franchise indeed decides to keep the triplet intact, it will have to show creativity to build a more coherent team around it, which has very limited room for maneuver today (whether financially or for transfers) . The Suns undoubtedly also hope that more automatisms can be created over time after the numerous injuries this season (in particular Bradley Beal). Finally, the Cactus are perhaps also counting on a change of coach to maximize this old but still very talented group.

The next few months will tell us in which direction the Suns will truly go. But at the time of these lines, we admit that we have difficulty seeing a path that could allow them to one day reach the summits.
