The Cotonou Hall hosts Phase 2 of West Africa Basketball Classics

The Cotonou Hall of Arts, Leisure and Sports hosted phase 2 of the West Africa Basketball Classics from Sunday April 28 to Thursday May 2, 2024. A competition hosted by ASPAC BBC with the collaboration of the Beninese Basketball Federation (Fbbb) which made it possible to know the four teams who will be on the Nigerian side for phase 3.

Allow clubs, especially those that do not participate in the BAL (the Basketball Africa League, a flagship competition which brings together the 16 best clubs on the continent) to measure themselves in a sub-regional competition of continental scope. This is the objective of the WABC which brought together for this phase 2, Ghana, Nigeria, Togo and Benin. Authorized by Fiba Africa Zone 3, the WABC chaired by former African champion, Nigerian Olumide Oyedeji aims to be a springboard for players so that they gain experience while giving themselves visibility on the continental and international.

At the end of five days of competition, the teams qualified for the Final Four which will soon be played in Abuja, Nigeria are Gidi Giants, Aspac BBC, Kwara Falcons and Swallows Académie from Togo. It should be noted that it is a linear tournament which is played in 3 stages. The four best teams from the first two phases (Lomé and Cotonou) qualify for stage 3 in Abuja.

But, beyond the results on the field, we must underline the good organization of the organizers who put the teams in the best conditions for international competitions. The duo Boni Akobi, General Director of Aspac and Bart Van Eenoo, General Director of the Autonomous Port of Cotonou have provided the necessary means for a good and flawless success of the basketball festival. Proof that Benin can indeed organize a continental-scale competition.
