For once, the sporting officials at FC Bayern didn’t even have to look. Thomas Tuchel was already there, but actually soon gone. And then maybe there again. And definitely gone now.
Now, after no agreement could be found with the current head coach for a 180 degree turn, Max Eberl and Christoph Freund not only have their backs against the wall. There is actually no wall at all anymore.
Option number one, Xabi Alonso, understandably wanted to stay in Leverkusen. Julian Nagelsmann preferred to be with the German national team, even if the national coach would have found opposition at his former club that was difficult to overcome. Ralf Rangnick, option number three, first said yes and then declined again.
A week of talks with no result
And then, after the 2-1 defeat at Real Madrid, Eberl and his friend approached Thomas Tuchel and asked whether he wanted to stay after the really good performance in the premier class. Discussions were held until yesterday, Thursday, then the decision was made: No, Tuchel isn’t staying either.

It is a drama in countless acts. How do Eberl and Co. actually want to sell the person who will take over this team at some point? To speak of a “wish solution” when a new coach is hired in July would be about as inappropriate as a club honorary president insinuating that the current Bayern coach “doesn’t think Pavlovic can be improved.”
High-profile breakdown show
Such a high-profile mishap show would be new territory even for FC Bayern, which was once FC Hollywood. Unloved new territory, of course, but new territory nonetheless. And it’s a bit embarrassing, as Joachim Löw might say. (Who doesn’t have a job right now, by the way).
“If a woman doesn’t want to go out to dinner with you, you can’t force her to,” Tuchel once said when he was still coach at Chelsea. “You just walk back a little and maybe she’ll call you.”
