The Cannes Festival kicks off with the cream of the cinema gathered together – El Sol de México

CANNES. The Cannes festival, the great world cinema event, begins today aspiring to repeat its exceptional success from last year when award-winning films such as Anatomy of a Fall by the Frenchwoman Justine Triet – Palme d’Or – and Zone of Interest by the British Jonathan Glazer – Festival Grand Prize and Fipresci Award – also shined at this year’s Oscar ceremony.

Although tradition dictates that at major film festivals a particular year’s exceptional selection is followed by a “lean crop,” no one can predict what the tone and results of the 2024 selection will be. This depends in part on films from little-known filmmakers and selected first or second films. These are not lacking in this year’s selection accompanied by works by renowned filmmakers, also known as Cannes regulars.

Among them none other than Francis Ford Coppola, winner of two Palmes d’Or, who returns to the competition with his utopian and very personal $120 million production Megalopolis; Oliver Stone with his documentary Lula, about the president of Brazil, the Canadian David Cronenberg with The Shrouds; the always surprising and prolific Greek Yorgos Lanthimos with his new release Kinds of Kidness; the Italian Paolo Sorrentino with Parthenope; George Miller leads Furiosa and Kevin Costner Horizon. An America saga, these last two and Stone, out of competition.

Accompanying them is the three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep and George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars saga, who come to receive the honorary Palmes d’Or; Joining the parade of stars are Faye Dunaway, Wim Wenders, Marco Bellocchio, Ron Howard, Frederick Wiseman, Montxo Armendáriz and Costa Gavras.

The famous Greek-French filmmaker will inaugurate in his official role as president of the French Cinematheque, the twentieth anniversary edition of the Cannes Classics section where the restored and digitized version of the classic French film Napoleon (1927) will be premiered, something that It is anticipated that it will be one of the most important events.

The international jury that will award the Palme d’Or and the official competition awards is chaired by the director of Barbie, Greta Gerwig, and is made up, among others, of the actress Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), the Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona, his Japanese colleague Kore-eda Hirokazu, the Italian actor Pierfrancisco Favino and the actresses Eva Green (France) and Nadine Labaki (Lebanon).

A Mexican co-production

Among the 67 films that make up the official sections, including the international competition, with 22 films, there are six of American production, while the host, France, has 23 selected titles, highlighting among them the new films by award-winning directors such as Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez in co-production with Mexico), Leos Carax (It’s Not Me), Christophe Honore (Marcello Mio), Alain Guiraudie (Mercy) and Arnaud Desplechin (Espectadores), not all in the official race.

The almost total absence of Latin American proposals is noticeable. Only Motel Destino by Brazilian Karim Ainouz is included, while the Asian films in the official program total nine titles, only one going for the awards.

Regarding films from Latin America, the situation seems more balanced in the prestigious parallel sections. The Directors’ Fortnight includes three Latin American productions in its selection of 21 titles. This is the Brazilian The Fall from Heaven by Eryk Rocha and Gabriela Carneiro da Cunha; from the Chilean Los hyperboreos by Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña, as well as the Argentine Something old, something new, something borrowed from Hernán Rosselli.

Another Argentine film, Simón de la Montaña by Federico Luis is among the seven titles – first or second work by a director – that make up the Critics’ Week program. A detail worth celebrating since the situation of Argentine cinema is known due to the attacks of President Javier Milei. The second production is Baby by Brazilian Marcelo Caetano.

It is anticipated that among the acts of protest expected during the festival would be precisely that of Argentine filmmakers against Milei’s policies, the already announced strike of some of the festival’s employees which could disrupt the development of the event, rallies in support of Ukraine and against the Gaza conflict, while security measures would be especially reinforced due to the proximity of the Olympic Games that begin in Paris and other French cities in mid-July.
