Syntainics MBC Secures Bundesliga Stay but Searches for New Coach as Predrag Krunic Heads to Japan

In the end, the Syntainics MBC from Weißenfels managed to stay in the Bundesliga with ease – but they have to look for a new coach.

With three wins at the end of the season, the MBC stayed away from the major relegation vortex and even achieved its best BBL season placement in nine years with 13th place. However, one of the architects of this success will leave the club: According to the club, head coach Predrag Krunic is making use of an exit clause and taking over a not yet known club in Japan. The 56-year-old’s contract would originally have run until 2025.

“My decision is not a decision against Syntainics MBC, but a decision for my personal future,” he is quoted as saying in a statement from the Bundesliga club. Krunic had already coached Weißenfels for the second time in his career, he was already under contract with MBC in the 2015/16 season and almost led the bottom team, which was at the bottom when he took office, to stay in the league. What failed then worked this time. “We all achieved our goals, including me personally, after my first commitment in 2016 felt unfinished,” said Krunic.

Successor should be determined at the beginning of June – license granted without conditions

It is not yet clear who will coach the club in the future. “We would have loved to continue working together, but we understand that he has to accept the lucrative offer from abroad,” says Martin Geissler, managing partner, who now has to look for a successor – according to the club, this should be decided at the beginning of June. It is also clear that MBC will receive a transfer fee for Krunic’s move.

This amount, a “small but important piece of the mosaic,” as the club statement says, also contributes to the MBC being able to meet the increased minimum budget of 3.5 million euros that the BBL requires of its participants. This has now been formally confirmed to the Saxony-Anhalt team: they have received the license for the coming season without any conditions.
