World No.1 Iga Swiatek reached the round of 16 of the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome by beating Kazakh Yulia Putintseva who made her doubt in the second set (6-3, 6-4) on Saturday.
Swiatek, winner of the last two Roland-Garros, scored her fourth victory in as many confrontations against the 41st player in the world, the second of the year.
But the Pole, who won three titles this season (Doha, Indian Wells, Madrid), was scared in the 2nd set: she was led 4-1, before overthrowing her opponent who broke down nervously after letting five break points to lead 5-1.
Swiatek will meet in the next round the winner of the match between the German Angelique Kerber (331st in the world), back on the circuit this year after a sixteen-month maternity leave, and the Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich (113th).
