Amir has been with the Kanu Swabians since the 2022 World Championships. He speaks German very well and is currently doing training and he is also a coach in the Swabian Canoeing student section and has been since autumn 2022. Now he can compete in the Olympic Games in the men’s canoe. The publication took place today by Thomas Bach. Amir starts for the IOC refugee team and is therefore the fifth Swabian canoeist who will compete in Paris 2024.

So now there are “five” Swabian canoeists at the start in Paris – sensational.

It’s official: 36 athletes will be IOC Refugee Team Paris 2024 and represent the global displaced population of over 100 million people at the Paris 2024 Olympics this summer.

The 36 members of the team come from 11 different countries of origin and are currently hosted by 15 different National Olympic Committees. In Paris they will compete in 12 different sports: swimming, athletics, badminton, boxing, breaking, canoeing (slalom and racing), cycling (road), judo, shooting, taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling (freestyle and Greco-Roman).

This was announced by the President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, announced on Thursday (May 2) at a ceremony at the Olympic House in Lausanne, Switzerland. He said: “We welcome you all with open arms. They are an asset to our Olympic community and our societies. By participating in the Olympics, you demonstrate human potential for resilience and excellence. This will send a message of hope to the more than 100 million displaced people around the world.”

The IOC refugee team is taking part in the Olympics for the third time, following previous appearances in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. This year’s chef de mission will be Masomah Ali Zada, who competed in Tokyo 2020 as a member of the IOC refugee team.

The athletes in the IOC refugee team looked after by the DOSB:
Alaa Maso (Country of origin: Syria/Sport: Swimming/Training facility: OSP Hannover/in Germany since: 2015)
Kasra Mehdipournejad (Iran/Taekwondo/TCC Friedrichshafen/2017)
Yekta Jamali (Iran/Weightlifting/OSP Heidelberg/2022)
Omid Ahmadisafa (Iran/Boxen/OSP Berlin/2021)
Mohammad Amin Alsalami (Syria/Athletics/OSP Berlin or SCC Berlin/2015)
Adnan Khankan (Syria/Judo/OSP Köln/2015)
Mahboubeh Barbari Yharfi (Iran/Judo/Bayreuth/2019)
Saeid Fazloula (Iran/Canoe Racing/Rheinbrüder Karlsruhe/2015)
Arab Sibghatullah (Afghanistan/Judo/Mönchengladbach/2023)

A tenth athlete from the Refugee Olympic Team Paris 2024 also lives and trains in Germany, but is looked after directly by the International Canoe Federation (ICF): Amir Rezanejad Hassanjani (Iran/Canoe Slalom/Augsburg/2021).

The athletes on the Refugee Olympic Team are selected based on their sporting achievements and personal background. The prerequisite for admission is a refugee status recognized by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). In Rio in 2016 there was still a ten-strong squad; in Tokyo there were already 29 athletes; at that time six were looked after by the DOSB.
