The Lower Austrian Valentin Bontus has set his sights on the next top spot at the Kite Foil World Championships starting on Tuesday ahead of Hyeres in France. The 23-year-old finished fourth at last year’s World Championships and this year’s European Championships, just outside the medal ranks.

He was also at the forefront in Hyeres at the end of April on the occasion of the Olympic Sailing Week and, like Alina Kornelli, ended up in fifth place. The 24-year-old secured one of the last tickets for the Summer Games in Paris.

Series from Bontus should last

Bontus had already secured qualification for the Olympic premiere of his discipline last year. Since then, things have been going smoothly for the Perchtoldsdorf native. “In the last four events I have never been worse than seventh – that is my goal here too. Along with the games, the World Cup is the ‘peak event’ this year. I have good material with me, I’m sure I can perform with it,” said Bontus before the first races on Tuesday.

“I can finally drive off in peace”

Kornelli also wants to show off again at the last regatta before the Summer Games without the reduced pressure to qualify. “I’m super relaxed, I can finally drive freely – and enjoy everything. I want to really push here. If I fall, I fall – I don’t care. I want to push the limits and I’m looking forward to it,” said Kornelli.
