Steinhauser stops Pogacar’s winning streak with solo escape

Georg Steinhauser stopped Slovenia’s superstar Tadej Pogacar’s winning streak at the Giro d’Italia on Wednesday and celebrated his first professional victory. The 22-year-old German crowned a solo escape on the 17th stage and won the mountain finish on the Passo Brocon after 159 kilometers.

Pogacar, who has already clinched five daily victories, attacked late and took second place, a good one and a half minutes behind, further extending his lead over Colombian Daniel Felipe Martinez in the overall standings.

The battle for overall victory remains a clear affair, with Pogacar almost eight minutes ahead. This is unlikely to change on Thursday, when a sprint finish is expected on the 18th stage over 178 kilometers from Fiera di Primiero to Padua.
