Spanish Judokas Shine at World Championships: Sherazadishvili and Mosakhlishvili Secure Bronze Medals

The Famu de Frutos judoka Nikoloz Sherazadishvili won bronze yesterday in the -100 kilo category of the world championships held in Abu Dhabi, third world medal for the athlete from the Vigo club after the golds of 2018 and 2021, those at -90 kilos.

Sherazadishvili won the first fight against Brazilian Rafael Buzacarini and in the second he got rid of the Colombian Francisco Balanta, but saw his path to a new gold cut off by the representative of Azerbaijan Zelym Kotsoiev, European champion in 2023 and fifth in the Olympic ranking, who beat him in the quarterfinals.

In the repechage, however, the judoka of Famu was impeccable, with an initial victory over the Georgian George Unidoslauri and, already in the fight for bronze, over the Canadian Kyle Reyes, whom he defeated by shidos. The American tried to keep his distance and attack with his legs, but ‘Shera’ was more determined in the attack and, after nine minutes of serious fighting, Reyes received a third and final penalty.

The Spanish judoka thus achieved his first world medal since he rose in category and won his third medal in a World Cup, after the golds won in 2018 and 2021 in the -90 kilo category. In addition, she showed that she is in shape for next summer’s Olympic Games in Paris.

Nikoloz Sherazadishvili’s medal joins that won on the eve, also of bronze, by another Spanish judoka of Georgian origin, Tristani Mosakhlishvili, in -90 kilos.

Exempt from fighting in the round of 32 due to his good ranking, Mosakhlishvili began his career in the round of 32, where he beat the Frenchman Maxime-Gaël Ngayap Hambou. Then in the round of 16 he beat the Hungarian Peter Safrany, but lost in the quarterfinals to the Japanese Goki Tajima.

The Japanese advanced further in the tournament – he was ultimately champion – and that put the Spaniard in the repechage for one of the two bronzes. And there he beat the Lebanese Caramnob Sagaipov, Therefore, Mosakhlishvili took the podium alongside the Kyrgyz Erlan Sherov, also bronze, and accompanied the aforementioned Tajima and the Serbian Nemanja Majdov, who won the silver. In this way, Tristani also got a place for the Paris Olympic Games.
