Bankruptcy in Paderborn – weak HSV remains in the second division

As of: 8:50 p.m. | Reading time: 5 minutes

HSV has prematurely lost its last chance of reaching relegation. The Hamburg team lost after a shockingly weak performance in Paderborn. In the parallel game, Magdeburg missed out on staying in the league.

Hamburger SV no longer has a chance of promotion to the Bundesliga. Coach Steffen Baumgart’s team deservedly lost 0-1 (0-1) at SC Paderborn on Friday evening. With one game still to play, HSV can no longer make up the four-point gap to the relegation place. Fortuna Düsseldorf is assured of at least third place. In front of 15,000 spectators in the sold-out Paderborn Stadium, Koen Kostons scored the decisive goal for the hosts in the seventh minute. Hamburg played as if inhibited and were harmless on offense.

“We saw that the boys fought and made things, but there were just too many mistakes that you shouldn’t make in a game like this. But that has nothing to do with attitude. We are all very disappointed,” said HSV coach Steffen Baumgart.

Paderborn started strong and combined impressively through the midfield again and again. Coach Lukas Kwasniok’s team rewarded themselves early for their committed performance: Kostons beat Miro Muheim after a cross and shot the ball powerfully under the crossbar from an acute angle. The goalscorer, who missed a free pass in front of HSV goalkeeper Matheo Raab, and Raphael Obermair had further chances for the hosts.

Almost nothing came from Hamburg on the offensive. Baumgart, who ran tirelessly up and down the sidelines at his old coaching place, was visibly dissatisfied with his team’s performance. When he didn’t like that midfielder Anssi Suhonen wanted to take a throw-in, he took the ball out of the 23-year-old’s hands himself. Baumgart made three substitutions for the second half.

But the SCP still had the better chances. Filip Bilbija failed to hit the post (59′) and headed into the arms of Raab (71′). At the back, Calvin Brackelmann saved against Hamburg’s Ransford Königsdörffer.

Magdeburg must continue to tremble

1. FC Magdeburg is not yet certain of staying in the league. The Saxony Anhalters only managed a goalless draw in the last home game of the season against SpVgg Greuther Fürth. In front of 26,620 spectators, Magdeburg once again failed due to their harmless attack. Fürth played calmly in a balanced game, but without being completely convincing.

Although the hosts started off powerfully, it was clear early on that things weren’t going well in attack. Amara Condé had the only compelling opportunity in the first half, but his goal was disallowed for offside. Fürth stood up, but the Franconians didn’t have much to offer up front either. Things only got tricky after Magdeburg lost the ball slightly in the build-up game, but Robert Wagner (40′) couldn’t get the ball past FCM goalkeeper Dominik Reimann.

After the change, both teams stepped up their efforts and created chances. Tim Lemperle (57th) missed the greatest opportunity to date when he got past Reimann, but Tobias Müller, who was sprinting back, hit the ball off the line. From then on, Fürth was the more determined team. Dennis Srbeny (65th) hit the side netting, Armindo Sieb (70th) missed clearly from a good position. Far too little came forward from Magdeburg to put Fürth in any decisive distress. Düsseldorf has secured third place

Fortuna Düsseldorf has to take part in the relegation games against the Bundesliga 16. already safe, but still hopes for direct promotion via first or second place in the table.

Coach Daniel Thioune appears calm before the big game at Holstein Kiel. “I’m trying to go into the game with maximum composure and coolness,” said the third-placed Couch on Friday. “We can’t lose anything now. Everything that comes now is an encore.”

With a win at the league leaders on Saturday (8.30 p.m./Sport1 and Sky), Fortuna would move within one point of Kiel on the penultimate matchday of the season. However, just one point is enough for the North Germans to celebrate promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time. “I’m up for it,” said Thioune, who has been unbeaten with his team in twelve league games. “At the moment I don’t have to worry about whether I’m going to have a party tomorrow night or not. That makes us a little different from the people of Kiel.”

The Fortuna coach also admitted that his team was currently shocked by the serious injury to defender Jamil Siebert. “Unfortunately, this doesn’t leave the team unscathed. That hit her hard,” said Thioune. The 22-year-old Siebert, who has developed into a regular central defender this season, suffered a torn tendon during training and will be out for a long time.

FC St. Pauli wants to celebrate a possible promotion to the Bundesliga not just with a fan party, but with a day of action for democracy, against racism, anti-Semitism and discrimination. This political season finale is scheduled to take place on Whit Monday (May 20th) with several other organizations in downtown Hamburg.

The second-placed team can complete their promotion this Sunday (1.30 p.m./Sky) with a home win against VfL Osnabrück. If leaders Holstein Kiel beat third-placed Fortuna Düsseldorf on the penultimate matchday, FC St. Pauli’s return to the first division after 13 years would already be certain on Saturday evening.

“If we were to be promoted on Saturday evening, then we would take it that way,” said coach Fabian Hürzeler at a press conference on Friday. However, he is especially looking forward to the home game against Osnabrück. “Millerntor is something special. “I expect a special atmosphere again, a loud, supportive, positive atmosphere,” he said. “Because the team deserves it and the team needs it too.”
