Udinese-Napoli, applause to remember the victims of the 1976 earthquake

At 12 seconds past 9pm, the exact time in which, 48 years ago, there was the terrible earthquake in Friuli, the referee Aureliano, who directs Udinese-Napoli, interrupted the game to commemorate the almost thousand victims of the 6th May 1976. All the approximately 20 thousand fans present stood up – even those from the visiting sector, supporters with whom there is a historic rivalry exacerbated by last year’s clashes during the championship celebrations – and gave a long commemorative applause. Before the match, a delegation from Udinese went to the Curva Nord with a bouquet of flowers in memory of the victims of the time. The Friuli stadium itself – today Bluenergy Stadium – was inaugurated on 26 September 1976, with the name of Stadio Rizzi. During the opening day, on the occasion of a Udinese-Seregno Serie C match, an earthquake occurred. The first match was in fact played, in front of 17 thousand spectators, only 11 days after the second great shock that terrified Fvg, that of 15 September.

Osimhen rejoices with his teammates

THE MATCH
Udinese keeps their hopes of survival alive thanks to Success’s first goal of the season, which equalises with time up. Napoli wasted yet another opportunity of the season after deservedly taking the lead and coming close to scoring the decisive blow several times. For the hosts the terrible triptych begins with Lecce, Empoli and Frosinone on which their stay in Serie A will depend. Cannavaro for the first match in Serie A with “his” Napoli, revolutionizes the starting 11, including tactical deployment: captain out Pereyra with Brenner and Samardzic behind the lone striker, Lucca. Calzona has to give up Kvaratskhelia and Raspadori, who are injured. Up front he chooses Lindstrom with Osimhen and Politano. The first emotion comes from Lindstrom himself who in the 15th minute challenges Okoye in a corner deflection from a free kick from the edge of the box aimed into the top corner. The public tries to support the home team, also thanks to the historic rivalry with the away fans, but emotions are lacking on the pitch. A sudden action by Ehizibue, on the right, in the 35th minute breaks the torpor: cross for Lucca, whose conclusion at the height of the spot is blocked. The ball arrives on Samardzic’s left: a curling conclusion, just wide. The real opportunity for the Bianconeri to take the lead comes at the feet of Bijol in the 44th minute: following a corner, Samardzic catches it in the middle of the area. The defender makes a veronica and directs it with precision into the bottom corner. Meret is immobile but the ball goes out to the bottom by an inch. No changes at half-time but in the 3rd minute Joao Ferreira risks the omelette: he loses a bloody ball in the small area and forces Okoye to dive away from Cajuste’s close range shot. The guests have a completely different attitude and Osimhen finds the advantage in the 6th minute with a powerful header that hits the post before swelling the net. The assist from the usual Politano was perfect.

Udinese – Naples

Cannavaro runs for cover and changes the attack and the set-up: the impalpable Lucca is out and an unwatchable Brenner for Success and Davis with Samardzic moving back to the midfield line. He strikes the spark that rekindles hope: in the 16th minute Davis causes panic with a serpentine and lets loose a low torpedo which Meret – the only Friulian on the pitch – prevents with a miraculous intervention. Napoli are one step away from doubling their lead: the defense loses the ball and Osimhen rushes towards the goal, but Okoye, in a desperate exit at the feet of the masked bomber, avoids the collapse. Udinese still dangerous in the 26th minute: Samardzic kicks a poisonous corner which no one reaches but Meret’s reflex saves the goal. In the 35th minute the match seemed to be settled: Osimhen scored his personal brace with a surgical diagonal on the counterattack. The stadium falls silent but the VAR restores breath to a breathless fan base. Udinese still wobbles but doesn’t fall: in the 38th minute Osimhen first calls Okoye to block a close range shot, then the new substitute Traorè shoots with a sure shot but a Juventus leg deflects into a corner. On the corner Osimhen misses the header from two steps. When all hope now seems lost, here’s Success’s goal in the 47th minute: desperate cross into the box, headed by Kristensten. The Nigerian striker controls and cools Meret.
