Serge Gnabry injured after Champions League in Madrid: out of the European Football Championship

National coach Julian Nagelsmann has to plan for the European Football Championship without Serge Gnabry. According to a club statement on Friday, the FC Bayern Munich offensive player suffered a torn muscle bundle in his left back thigh during the semi-final exit in the Champions League against Real Madrid. Gnabry will be missing from coach Thomas Tuchel’s team in the two Bundesliga games on Sunday against VfL Wolfsburg and then away at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

The German record champions did not predict how long the 28-year-old would have to take a break. However, since a torn muscle bundle requires several weeks to heal and Gnabry has been out repeatedly this season, a European Championship nomination is almost impossible. Gnabry would probably only be ready for action again during the tournament. The European Championship begins on June 14th with the opening game of the German selection against Scotland. The DFB team will previously play two test matches on June 3rd against Ukraine and on June 7th against Greece.

Gnabry, who was last part of the national team in the defeats against Turkey and Austria in November, was injured several times this season. After hip problems, a broken forearm and a brief illness last year, he had to miss three games due to muscle injuries. After making his comeback in February after a long break, he had to take another break for over two weeks in April. The large number of muscle injuries makes participation in the European Championships seem highly unlikely.

Nagelsmann will announce his provisional European Championship squad next week. At the European Championships, after the Scotland game, there are matches against Hungary (June 19th) and Switzerland (June 23rd). At FC Bayern, preparations for the new season start in July.
