UEFA allows participating countries at the European Championship in Germany to travel with selections of 26 instead of 23 players. Dutch national coach Ronald Koeman gets his way, as leaked last week.
National coaches must submit a final list of players on June 7, which is nine days before the first match of the Dutch team. Players who subsequently become seriously injured or ill may, subject to UEFA approval, be replaced before a country’s first match. Goalkeepers may also be replaced before a country’s second match.
Koeman’s lobby
With the ability to call up 26 players, any injuries that arise can be dealt with more easily. Due to the busy playing schedule, national coaches were concerned about the physical condition of the players.
At the end of March, Koeman announced a lobby to encourage UEFA to change the rule. After the lost practice match against Germany, he called the fact that only 23 players were allowed to be selected absurd.

At least three goalkeepers
The European association emphasizes that selecting 26 players is not an obligation, the minimum is 23 players, the maximum 26. The selection must contain at least three goalkeepers and one of the goalkeepers is required to be given jersey number 1.
In addition, players do not have to fear ending up in the stands. All selection players may sit on the bench and possibly substitute in European Championship matches.
