Kaiserslautern has to continue to tremble, Rostock faces relegation

As of: 3:43 p.m. | Reading time: 4 minutes

The relegation battle in the second division remains open. In contrast to 1. FC Nürnberg, Kaiserslautern missed out on early rescue at Hertha BSC. Hansa Rostock also lost and can only hope for relegation.

FC Hansa Rostock lost at FC Schalke 04 and can be relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga this Sunday. Coach Mersad Selimbegovic’s team lost 1:2 (1:2) to Gelsenkirchen on Saturday. For Rostock it was the fifth defeat in a row. The team from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania remains second to last in the table with 31 points. If Wehen Wiesbaden wins at Eintracht Braunschweig, Hansa can no longer reach the relegation place.

Kenan Karaman (22nd minute) and Paul Seguin (45th+5) scored the goals for Schalke. Sarpreet Singh scored Rostock’s only goal (32′). The Hansa goalscorer saw a red card in the second half after a hard foul on Schalke’s top talent Assan Ouédraogo (70th).

In front of 61,533 spectators in the sold-out Gelsenkirchen Arena, a hectic and, at least at times, fast-paced game developed from the start. After a corner from Thomas Ouwejan, Karaman headed in to make it 1-0 for the hosts. It was the 30-year-old’s 13th goal of the season. However, Rostock reacted well. Singh equalized with a deflected shot. Before the break, however, Seguin gave Schalke the lead again. A ball from the midfielder that was actually intended as a cross flew into the goal. Before the game there were riots between the two fan camps.

Kaiserslautern misses out on rescue

Hertha BSC gave Pal Dardai a win in what was probably his last home game as Berlin head coach and caused further tremors in the relegation battle at 1. FC Kaiserslautern. The Hungarian team, whose contract will not be extended according to consistent media reports, won 3-1 (2-1) against the Palatinate team on Saturday in front of 67,144 spectators in the Berlin Olympic Stadium.

The Lauterers, who return to the Olympic Stadium in two weeks for the cup final against champions Leverkusen, will definitely avoid direct relegation from the 2nd Bundesliga because Rostock did not win at Schalke. The FCK can still slip into the relegation place.

Only if Wiesbaden loses in Braunschweig on Sunday will the Palatinate team be assured of staying in the league before the last matchday. Next weekend, the team of veteran Friedhelm Funkel, who took over the team in February, will host Braunschweig am Betzenberg.

At Hertha, everything revolved around the coaching question before the game. “Bild”, the “Kicker” and the rbb had reported that Dardai would no longer be Hertha’s coach in the coming season. The club did not comment. The 48-year-old did not explicitly confirm the reports in an interview with Sky.

There was once again an impressive backdrop for the Hungarian for what was likely to be his home farewell. His team controlled the action and didn’t let themselves be disturbed by the visitors’ equalizer. Ritter beautifully flicked the ball under the crossbar. Otherwise, the FCK remained mostly pale offensively.

Nuremberg celebrates staying in the league

1. FC Nürnberg saved themselves from trembling and dispelled any remaining doubts about staying in the league. In the first game after the separation from sports director Dieter Hecking, the passionate Franconians powerfully ended their series of five defeats in a row with a 3-0 (1-0) win against newly promoted SV Elversberg on the penultimate matchday. With now 40 points, the “club” can no longer be relegated and can start the final business trip to Hamburger SV next Sunday without pressure.

Coach Cristian Fiel’s players compensated the 34,031 spectators in the last home game of the season a little for the sobering season in the second half of the season. Felix Lohkemper (43rd minute), captain Jan Gyamerah (52nd/hand penalty) and Can Uzun (64th) scored the goals.

After almost 15 minutes, Fiel took off his training jacket on the sidelines and watched a Nuremberg team running with enthusiasm. Goalkeeper Carl Klaus (30th) was only called upon once after a creative corner and a shot from Jannik Rochelt against the long-saved Elversberg team.

Shortly before the change, Lohkemper used a through pass from Uzun to take the lead. Gyamerah increased the score in the penalty area after a handball from Robin Fellhauer. Sturmjuwel Uzun, who is due to move to Eintracht Frankfurt, set the atmospheric finale with his 16th goal of the season in what will foreseeably be the last home game in front of Nuremberg fans. The 18-year-old was substituted in the 80th minute to loud applause.
