Due to the heavy rains that have been plaguing Rio Grande do Sul since the beginning of the month, the Gaucho American Football Federation (FGFA) announced, last Sunday (12), that flag football tournaments should not be held in the first half of this year. . In other words, the Santa Maria Soldiers men’s team and the city’s new women’s team do not yet have a date to debut in 2024.

Last week, the entity had already announced the indefinite suspension of the Gaucho American Football Championship, which has the green-black “Army” team in the dispute, as well as the launch of the “FABR United for the South” campaign, with the support from other groups. In December 2023, the president of Soldiers, Ricardo Daronchexclusively stated to the Site the implementation of a team masculine of flag football at the club. The Mexican Axel Aguirrewho has 20 years of experience in both oval ball sports, arrived in the city in March, wore the mantle of Santa Maria in the squad’s two matches at the Gauchão de Futebol Americano and would be the “centerpiece” of the entry into the sport.

However, in the meantime, the squad that defended the green-black of the “Army” – and even had athletes present at the “pre-call” of the Brazilian Confederation – decided to leave the association and form a new team. The reasons that supported the decision-making, as well as the side of the Soldiers’ representatives, can be seen by clicking here. Santa Maria’s new flag football initiative was being developed but had not been officially announced at this time.
