RS Berkane Takes Slight Lead in Confederation Cup Final Against Zamalek

Quickly leading 2-0, RS Berkane finally won 2-1 at home against Zamalek this Sunday in the first leg of the Confederation Cup final. Thanks to this result, the Moroccans take a slight option on the coronation but will not be safe during the return leg next week in Cairo, the away goal rule still being in force in Africa.

RS Berkane started strong after only 30 seconds of play. Following a high recovery following a poor Egyptian recovery, Youssef El Fahli, served in the area on a back cross from the right, came up against the defense which released in disaster (1st). A first hot Moroccan alert therefore called for a second in the 4th minute. On a corner kick from the right corner then badly deflected by Ahmed Fatouh, Youssef El Fahli saw his acrobatic recovery fall just above the goal guarded by Mohamed Awad.

Berkane in front thanks to VAR

The third situation occurred almost immediately, exactly two minutes later. Still on a corner coming from the right, shooter Hamza El Moussaoui saw his teammate’s rebound blocked at the far post, then a second collapse in the area following innocuous contact with an opponent (6th). If the Kenyan referee Peter Waweru did not flinch at this shot, he then pointed to the penalty spot after viewing the VAR, shortly after a foul by Hossam Abdelmaguid on the untenable El Fahli. Burkinabรจ captain Issoufou Dayo took his responsibilities and transformed it with full composure, thus opening the score for Mouine Chaabani’s men (1-0, 13th).

This goal had the merit of stinging the Egyptians who then took possession of the leather by more than 60%. They also signed their first dangerous situation with a free kick from Zizo from the left and headed by Abdelhak Assal in the area (29th). However, it was the Moroccans who struck again with a second achievement to the credit of Adil Tahif. After a corner taken from the right by Mohamed El Morabit, the left-back beat the opposing goalkeeper at the far post, not exempt from any criticism, with a header (2-0, 32nd).

Zamalek can still believe it

Despite this setback, the Egyptians held on and finally worried the Berkani goalkeeper with their first shot, on target moreover, in the 43rd minute. Following a cross from Ahmed El Fatouh, Beninese Samson Akinyoola smashed the ball with his head for a tap from Hamza Hamiani, who was having a rather quiet evening until then. The White Knights were finally rewarded for their efforts just after the restart. From the right, Zizo delivered a perfect cross for Seifeddine Jaziri. The Tunisian center forward rose high to beat Hamiani with a header into the small net on his left (2-1, 46th).

Disturbed by the reduction in the score from the start, the Berkanis got their heads back upright a quarter of an hour later. Youssef Mehri thus delivered a heavy strike to Awad’s right corner (62nd), followed in the next minute by El Moussaoui who stumbled on the Egyptian goalkeeper following a lofted pass from a teammate (63rd). Zamalek responded with a back pass from Jaziri for Zizo to miss the target with a shot that was too crushed (67th). The pace then dropped, while the organisms were tested by fatigue. The score no longer changed. The RS Berkane won by a narrow head. A slight lead which could be shattered when they return to Egypt next week.
