Royce Gracie Wows Participants at Martial Arts Seminar in Madagascar

Participants say they are attracted by the seminar led by Royce Gracie.

The participants are seduced and impressed. Nearly two hundred interested parties, including judokas, wrestlers, karatekas and mostly jiujitsukas, benefited from the more than two-hour seminar, led by Royce Gracie, on Sunday morning at the Mahamasina Sports Palace. “There are no good or bad students, there are rather good and bad masters (…) I taught them basic Gracie Jiujitsu techniques,” confides Royce Gracie after the sharing session, which is held behind closed doors.

The three-time Ultimate Fighting Championships champion says he is seduced by the Big Island after five days spent on Malagasy soil. “Madagascar reminds me of Brazil. The two countries are very similar. I like this country. People work hard… I will come back next year and this time I will go to the beach,” he says.

“It’s very important that the founder of the art came in person to share his style, his ways of doing things… My sparring Fabrice Payet, 2nd dan black belt, said that he made technical discoveries,” mentions the great Malagasy champion, Zo Aina Tsilavina Randriamanga.

Several judo champions attended the seminar. “For me, it’s an opportunity to be able to meet a jiu-jitsu great. I can’t even believe it. He made me know that jiu-jitsu is more about technique than strength… Judo and jiu-jitsu are a little closer. I was able to improve some basic judo techniques that I find in jiu-jitsu and vice versa,” said the second best junior judokate in the world, Laura Rasoanaivo.

Royce Gracie is on tour leading courses eight months out of the twelve. After his visit to Madagascar, he will return to Canada for two days and will then travel to North Carolina, in the United States.
