Refugee Teams Announced for Paris Olympics: A Symbol of Hope and Unity

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on the 2nd (Korean time) the list of refugee teams participating in the Paris Olympics in July.

The refugee team is a special team formed by the IOC to enable athletes who left their home countries for unavoidable reasons such as civil strife, war, and discrimination to compete on the Olympic stage. It was formed for the third time following the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The refugee team players come from 11 countries, including Afghanistan, Cameroon, Cuba, Iran, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, and Venezuela.

They are currently living in 15 Western countries, including Australia, Canada, France, England, the United States, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, and are preparing for the Olympics.

The IOC funds their preparation and participation in the Olympics from the Olympic Solidarity Fund.

The number of refugee team players increased from 10 in the 2016 Rio Games and 29 in the 2020 Tokyo Games.

36 athletes will compete in 12 sports: track and field, badminton, breaking, boxing, canoeing, cycling, judo, shooting, taekwondo, swimming, weightlifting, and wrestling.

The refugee team will be the second team to enter the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, following Greece, the birthplace of the modern Olympics.
