Refugee Olympic Team Announced for Paris 2024: Two Swimmers Confirmed

36 athletes from eleven countries, hosted by another 15, will form the Refugee Olympic Team at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, in which there are 15 athletes from Iran.

Among them, two swimmers were confirmed. Through its Olympic Solidarity program, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) provided scholarships for the Olympic Games to 75 refugee athletes, from 12 countries, residents in 24 host countries and representatives of 14 sports.

With the Mardini sisters, who shocked the world, retired, the confirmed swimmers are: Alaa Maso, a Syrian refugee in Germany and Matin Balsini, an Iranian refugee in the United Kingdom. Both were already Olympians in Tokyo 2020+1.

The 36 chosen have now passed their respective federations’ qualification tournaments or have been deemed to have sufficient athletic level to compete.

IOC President Thomas Bach of Germany said after the announcement: “This will send a message of hope to the more than 100 million displaced people around the world. At the same time, they will make billions of people around the world aware of the magnitude of the refugee crisis.”

In Paris, the Olympic Aquatic Center, built for the Olympic Games, will host the artistic swimming, diving and water polo preliminary phases. Meanwhile, the swimming will be held at the Arena Paris La Défense, the largest indoor stadium in Europe which, since December 2017, has been the home and residence of the French Top 14 rugby team Racing 92.

The Olympic swimming trials will be held from July 27 to August 4. In total there will be 35 competitions: 17 in the men’s category, 17 in the women’s category, and a mixed relay.

A total of 852 athletes will compete in Paris 2024 swimming with a maximum of 26 places for men and 26 for women available for each National Olympic Committee (NOC).
