FC Bayern has to accept another setback in its search for a coach. Desired candidate Ralf Rangnick will not succeed Thomas Tuchel in the new season. The 65-year-old canceled the Munich meeting by telephone.

The next rejection for Bayern has been received. Ralf Rangnick will also not be Thomas Tuchel’s successor. The former Bundesliga coach (Stuttgart, Hoffenheim, Schalke, Leipzig) remains coach of the Austrian national team and is fulfilling his contract with the ÖFB, which runs until the 2026 World Cup. First had BILD reports about it.

“I am the Austrian team boss with all my heart. This task gives me an incredible amount of joy and I am determined to successfully continue on our chosen path,” says Rangnick: “I would like to expressly emphasize that this is not a rejection of FC Bayern, but a decision for my team and our common goals. Our full concentration is on the European Championships. We will do everything we can to get as far as possible!”

The Rangnick cancellation came on Wednesday evening, but was initially kept secret. The coach spoke to the Bayern bosses personally on the phone and told them his reasons.

Bayern had previously tried unsuccessfully to sign Xabi Alonso (42/stays in Leverkusen) and Julian Nagelsmann (36/stays with the DFB). On Tuesday evening after the Champions League game against Real Madrid (2:2), the Munich club bosses sounded optimistic and indicated that Rangnick would make a decision shortly.

Rangnick didn’t want a double burden

According to the BILD report, 65-year-old Rangnick did not want to completely change his current life. This includes the fact that he didn’t want to do two jobs right now, like planning the Bayern squad, while he’s completing the European Championships with Austria. Thanks to his many years of experience, he also knows what it means to coach a top club. This was said to have been unimaginable for him in his current phase of life.
