Rafael Nadal continues to struggle after his last injury break. The Spaniard was eliminated in the second round of the ATP 1000 tournament in Rome against Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz.

In Italy’s capital, where he is the record winner with ten tournament victories, Nadal had to bow to the world number nine 1:6, 3:6.

After his return to the competition court, Nadal also failed early in his first two tournament participations. In Barcelona the Australian Alex de Minaur was the final stop in the second round, in Madrid the Czech Jiri Lehecka was in the round of 16.

Nadal’s last big goals in his last year on the tour were to take part in the French Open, which begins in just a week, and in the Olympic Games, during which the tennis tournament also takes place on the clay courts in Roland Garros.

The latest entry in Nadal’s extensive medical file is a hip injury he suffered in Brisbane in early January.
