Quebec City’s Canac Stadium to Undergo Major Facade Renovation: Could Resemble Fenway Park

The renovation work on the facades of the Canac stadium could considerably change its exterior appearance. According to our information, the City of Quebec is considering replacing the current plaster covering with brick in order to give the building the look of classic baseball stadiums, such as the legendary Fenway Park in Boston.

On April 18, the Municipality published a call for tenders concerning professional architectural services for various works at the Canac stadium, including the complete renovation of the exterior envelope.

The specifications accompanying the invitation to tender do not specifically mention the construction of exterior brick walls. However, he specifies that the choice of new facade materials is moving towards masonry and wood.

Announcement Thursday

Note that the replacement of the plaster, which is cracked in many places, is not mentioned anywhere in the document.

The City of Quebec acts as project manager of the work. Contacted by Radio-Canada, the office of Mayor Bruno Marchand did not want to move forward with the installation of brick facing. He limited himself to saying that an announcement regarding the Canac stadium will take place next Thursday.

In addition to the renovation of the facades, the work covered by the call for tenders includes the repair and improvement of the structures (stand slabs, ramps, stairs, etc.) and concrete walls.

No more church pews

Another change which may not go unnoticed by regulars of the area without assigned seats: the famous long wooden benches without numbered seats will be replaced by 1,550 individual numbered seats like those installed in the boxes and mezzanine sections.

Improvements will also be made to the announcer’s booth and those of visiting media.

The call for proposals from the City of Quebec also includes the replacement of the garage located along the west facade with a double-height building of equivalent dimensions on the ground, or approximately 260 square meters, in order to allow the development of storage spaces in its upper part.

A two-story building nicknamed the chalet will be built right next to the new garage and family area. It will permanently accommodate the support infrastructure for the inflatable dome. The chalet will have a floor area of 470 square meters.

More than $20 million

The one-story annex which houses part of the stadium’s administrative premises, along the east facade, will be destroyed and replaced by a new construction of a maximum of two floors in architectural integration with the new stadium facades.

The bid target cost for all project work is $22.1 million, before taxes.

This amount excludes construction contingencies but includes overhead costs, design contingencies, administration costs, site organization costs and the contractor’s profits, specifies the City of Quebec.

The work must be planned and carried out outside of the baseball season, from October to April. However, some work could take place during the summer season, subject to temporary installations and developments intended to ensure public safety.

The start of construction is scheduled for July 2026. The revamped Canac stadium should be inaugurated on May 1, 2028.

Heritage value

Since the Canac stadium is of greater heritage interest, the work to which it will be subject must be approved by the Quebec City Planning and Conservation Commission.

The City of Quebec published a first call for tenders last year to carry out essentially the same work. No bidders came forward, so she had to start the process again.
