Puerto Rican Descendant Enrique Freeman Shines in NBA G-League Elite Camp and Draft Combine

The forward of Puerto Rican descent Enrique Freeman has become one of the great sensations after his participation in the NBA G-League Elite Camp, where he received an invitation to the Draft Combine for his good performance.

Freeman – who is the son of Puerto Rican Tania Torres and identified by the PUR Basket group – averaged 14 points, 6.5 rebounds and 56% shooting from the field in the two Elite Camp games. Meanwhile, he showed solidity on the offensive end and impressed with his offensive impact under the basket and for finding spaces to score from medium and long distance.

His performance in both games did not go unnoticed and he was one of the five invited to the NBA Combine, where he has also shown an important performance that places him among the most attractive players to choose in the next draw for the so-called best league in the world.

“It’s been an incredible journey, where I’m trying to show the hard work I’ve put in over the years… Playing in the Elite Camp and (with) those experiences I’ve tried to show myself to be a better player,” Freeman said when he was interviewed at the Draft Combine.

“In recent days I have shown that I am a good shooter, but in addition to that I think I have shown my IQ, the way of reading the game, knowing how to play it regardless of which player is on the court. I just want to be a winning guy, be number one. “I was around a winning coach in Akron and I want to impact whatever team I’m on to get wins,” he added.

The 23-year-old basket player announced that he has received invitations from teams to watch him train.

“I have worked with some teams and I am scheduled to do so with others soon,” he said.

Freeman, 6’7 in height and 7’2 in wingspan, has an admirable story, since despite having been a protagonist in his school days, he never received university offers and entered the University of Akron through a scholarship academic.

He decided to go to the team tryouts and got a spot, performing as the center of the quintet.

In his first year he played little, but in the following year he showed his talent throughout the United States, being named part of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) defensive team, leading in blocked shots with 44 and an average of 1.9 per game. Finally, in that season, he finished with an average of 7.9 points and 9.2 rebounds.

In fact, in one game he had 21 rebounds, the most by an Akron player since 1985.

As a junior, he ranked first in the NCAA in field goal percentage at 66.5% (175 of 263), was named MAC Defensive Player of the Year, and was selected to the All-Defensive Team of the Season. He also earned the 2022 MAC Tournament Most Valuable Player.

He was ranked in the NCAA’s ‘top 20’ in six categories: number four in total rebounds (367), sixth in rebounds per game (10.8), eighth in double-doubles (18), ninth in defensive rebounds per game (7.53) and number 19 in offensive rebounds per game (3.26). In turn, he was one of 13 NCAA players to average a double-double in points (13.2) and rebounds (10.8).

In his fourth year, Freeman finished the season with 1,191 points in 97 games, ranking him 27th all-time in program history. He was named to the All-MAC First Team, selected to the MAC All-Defensive team and was fifth in the nation in double-doubles with 19.

Meanwhile, his last year was a dream one as he finished his career first in rebounds (1,405), second in blocks (188) and third in points (1,843).

He was just the sixth University of Akron player to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in his career and the fourth to score 1,800 points in program history.

He also tied the NCAA single-season record for double-doubles with 31, joining Armando Bacot (2022) and David Robinson (1986) as the only players to record this feat.
