Will there still be VAR in the Premier League early next season? There is a chance that the video referee will disappear there. Premier League clubs are set to vote on a proposal to abolish VAR. The British media The Athletic and Sky Sports report this.

The vote will take place on June 6 at the Premier League’s annual meeting.

VAR has been present in the British top competition since 2019/2020, but since then, just like in Germany, there has been a lot of criticism of the system. VAR would actually lead to more controversial decisions.

That is why Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers believes that it is now time for a “constructive and critical conversation about the future of the video assistant”, according to a statement on social media.

Wolves would prefer to see the system disappear and has now submitted an application to the Premier League to vote on this proposal. If thirteen of the other nineteen clubs agree to scrap VAR, the proposal will be adopted.

The Premier League board does not support this plan at all, says Sky Sports. Although the criticism is that VAR leads to a lot of controversy, the competition management believes that “VAR remains a very effective tool in supporting the officials on the pitch”.

VAR not in Sweden

A few weeks ago, Sweden voted on the introduction of VAR. A majority of the clubs voted against the arrival and so the system was not introduced.
