Potential Los Angeles Lakers Head Coach: Comparing JJ Redick to Pat Riley

In the search for a new Los Angeles Lakers coach, everything points to three finalists. JJ Redick, James Borrego (Pelicans) and Sam Cassell (Celtics). The three have interviewed with the Los Angeles franchise to succeed Darvin Ham as head coach. They will be joined in the coming days by David Adelman (Nuggets) and Micah Nori (Heat).

Up to this point everything has been happening as expected. But, consistent with information published today by Jovan Buha and Shams Charania in The Athletic, Reddick seems like the most vaunted name. According to journalists, the Lakers see a potential Pat Riley in him. In the article they refer to the training style. However, the similarities go further if you want to be daring. Riley came to the Lakers’ bench in 1979 as an assistant coach after spending a couple of seasons as an analyst on the team’s radio broadcasts. In 1982, when Paul Westhead is fired for his confrontation with Magic Johnson, Riley unknowingly takes the reins, pushed by Jerry West.

Redick, like Riley, was also a role player. Although more important than Riles. And, even before his retirement, he forged a career as a communicator that has led him to one of the most desired positions in American sports television: being part of the gala trio of the broadcasts of ESPN alongside Doris Burke and the legendary Mike Breen. Riley had no coaching experience when he became assistant coach nor does Redick have any beyond coaching his son’s team in New York.

So much for the known coincidences with one of the most successful coaches and managers in NBA history.
