Playoffs in the Basketball Bundesliga: What to Expect in the Title Race

The playoffs in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) begin on Friday, but things get serious in the title race a little earlier this time. The Sports Information Service (SID) answers the most important questions about the championship round.

What’s new?

Based on the NBA model, the BBL has introduced a play-in tournament. The teams that took places seven to ten in the main round will fight for two open places in the quarter-finals. The winner of the duel Telekom Baskets Bonn (7th) – MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg (8th) will play in the round of the best eight against Alba Berlin (2nd).

The loser meets the winner of the game between EWE Baskets Oldenburg (9th) and Veolia Towers Hamburg (10th). The winner of the last play-in game will face Bayern Munich (1st).

Which mode is used?

In the play-ins there are pure knockout games, then from the quarterfinals onwards there are best-of-five series – three wins are necessary to advance. The 2-2-1 system is used, the team better placed in the main round starts with two home games and also plays a possible decisive fifth duel in its own hall.

What does the schedule look like?

The three play-in games will take place on Tuesday (2) and Thursday (1), with the quarterfinals starting on Friday. Alba starts (6.30 p.m.), from 8.30 p.m. the Niners Chemnitz (3rd) will meet newly promoted Rasta Vechta (6th). Champion ratiopharm Ulm (4th) starts on Saturday (6.30 p.m.) against the Würzburg Baskets (5th), after which it is FC Bayern’s turn for the first time (8.30 p.m.). The semi-finals begin on May 28th, the final series starts on June 8th. The champion will be determined by June 16th at the latest.

Who is the favorite?

Cup winner Munich. In the first season under Spanish star coach Pablo Laso there were always bumps, especially in the EuroLeague the team fell short of expectations. Most recently, Bayern flexed their muscles in their statement victory over the injury-plagued Alba Berlin (77:53).

Who could have a say for the title?

Despite all the problems, Berlin can never be written off; the former series champion has now achieved 13 wins in a row. Chemnitz has had a strong season so far, but has recently lost its footing after their triumph in the FIBA Europe Cup. It is doubtful that Ulm will surprise again and win the title again.

When will there be direct duels?

Alba and FC Bayern can only meet in the final at the earliest. In this case, Munich would have the home advantage as the main round winner.

Who shows the games?

All games can be seen live on the paid platform Dyn. Selected play-off matches are running on Welt TV and bild.de. The opening game between Chemnitz and Vechta is shown by Welt TV.

What else could be said…

“Now comes the time we’ve all been waiting for – the play-offs. I’m enjoying the moment, I love challenges. And the play-offs are always a challenge.” (Bayern star player Serge Ibaka)
