Pelayo Sanchez wins sixth Giro stage

Pelayo Sanchez won the sixth stage of the 107th Giro d’Italia on Thursday. The 23-year-old Spaniard celebrated his greatest career success to date on the 180 km section from Viareggio to Rapolano Terme, which included three gravel sections of the Strade Bianche one-day race.

In the sprint, Sanchez prevailed in a three-man escape group ahead of the French former world champion Julian Alaphilippe and the Australian Lucas Plapp. The overall leader’s pink jersey remains in the possession of the Slovenian favorite Tadej Pogacar.

The first of two time trials is on the program on Friday. On the 40.6 kilometers from Foligno to Perugia, more than 400 meters of altitude have to be climbed, 270 in the last eight kilometers to the finish alone.
