Óscar Córdoba’s Epic Training Fight: A Goalkeeper’s Tale

It is no secret to anyone that Óscar Córdoba is one of the best goalkeepers in the history of the Colombian Senior National Team. The goalkeeper who played for teams, among others, such as Deportivo Cali, Boca Juniors and Millonarios, left a very marked mark on the Tricolor goal.

Recently, Óscar gave an interview to Tropicana and in the middle of it he revealed a situation he went through in training for the Colombian National Team. Córdoba, who is currently a panelist on Espn Colombia, revealed a fight he had.

Óscar Córdoba’s anecdote was related to archer training in the Tricolor. In addition to Córdoba, former goalkeepers Faryd Mondragón and Miguel Calero were also present. The three were led by goalkeeper coach Pedro Antonio Zape.

The fight occurred in the middle of an area ball effort. Óscar Córdoba, in this training session, started saving, while Miguel Calero and Faryd Mondragón, under the orders of Zape, tried to score a goal.

But in this work to strengthen Óscar’s skills, as the minutes passed, things became heated, to the point that Córdoba himself had to complain with great anger to his teammates and his coach.

“The first cross they threw I went out to punch and I won; The second, I go out to punch and he grabs me, I don’t know if it was Miguel Calero or Faryd Mondragón, and he throws me to the ground, they scored the goal. I claimed it was a foul and they said no,” the historic Colombian goalkeeper began by saying.

“On the third play I returned to the goal, they gave me another push and a goal. I said but what happened and they responded that nothing. The patch was heating up until in one play I got up, finished them all off and told them who was next because we were going to fight each other,” added the former goalkeeper who also left a very marked mark on Boca Juniors.

But the issue in training took a more than unexpected turn when Córdoba said that Pedro Antonio Zape’s intention was for his pupil to show his character under the three sticks, a key aspect for every goalkeeper.
