“One of the best in football history”

Carlo Ancelotti has praised Toni Kroos highly before the end of his career. “He was and is one of the best midfielders in the history of football,” said the Real Madrid coach before the Spanish champions’ last league game this Saturday (9 p.m.) against Real Betis Sevilla.

He has great respect for the 34-year-old’s decision to end his active career after the European Championships at home in the summer: “I think it is the decision of a man with courage.” He would have liked to train Kroos in the coming season, but: “He is German, so it is not so easy to convince him to change his mind.”

Now it is time to find a successor for Kroos. It is “very complicated, if not impossible, to replace a player of this level, of this type,” said Ancelotti.

Together, Kroos and Ancelotti won the Spanish championship, the cup and the Supercup twice each with Real Madrid. Their third joint triumph in the Champions League is set to follow on June 1st at Wembley against Borussia Dortmund.
