Being awarded a black belt always constitutes a special moment in the life of a club and the licensee, even if it is often only one stage in a judoka’s career.

Also, in Offranville, emotion was strong when Simon Gbaguidi was awarded this grade by Marcel Pognant and Patrice Delaunay, his two teachers from his training club.

It must be said that the history of this distinction is a bit unusual.

Indeed, Simon Gbaguidi started judo when he was only five years old.

It was in October 2012 already at the Offranville dojo and already with Marcel Pognant and Patrice Delaunay at the helm.

He was accompanied by his twin brother Adrien who should soon join him in the circle of black belts.

A strong point: attendance

The two brothers then worked and progressed to pass the successive grades.

The white belt, one and two borders before the white-yellow belt, then yellow, orange, green, blue and brown for grade transitions which can summarize 12 years of judo.

According to their teachers, the strong point of the two brothers is “assiduity and despite their bickering, they progressed quickly. For two years, they decided to tackle the black belt and therefore the passage of the four value units.

They therefore successively passed UV4 which concerns refereeing and table attire.

UV2 then for the technical part with the obligation to know the names of judo movements.

UV1 with a kata, nage no kata, to be presented and finally UV3 for competition points.

For this last part, Simon Gbaguidi struck a big blow by winning five fights with five ippons and therefore the 50 points necessary to obtain the black belt.

A first step

This great performance was praised by Daniel Carlus, the president of JC Offranville, during the award ceremony.

“Obtaining the black belt is only the first step in the life of any judoka. There is still a lot to learn and a lot of levels to climb. In your life, when you tell your employer that you are a black belt, you will mark a point of recognition of seriousness.”

Note also that Adrien Gbaguidi, Simon’s brother, and his two great judo friends, Charles-Antoine and Thibaut should also quickly follow him by soon wearing the black belt.
