The traditional links, used to determine the distance of a first test, would be about to give way to an optical localization system, according to what the CBS network reports.

The Goodell circuit intends to implement this technology to measure the famous 10 yards which correspond to a first play in football during preseason matches. If the result is conclusive, the system will be put in place from the 2024 season.

Using an optical tracking system to measure a first down will accurately establish whether or not a team has successfully crossed the imaginary 10-yard line to get a new four-play series.

The links would however continue to be visible on the ground, but will only be used in the event of a technical failure. They will also allow coaches of both teams to have a visual reference point on ball positioning.

The system has already passed testing, having been installed in two stadiums last season but not used in the game. If it is officially adopted for 2024, it will have to be installed in the other 30 stadiums to across the league as well as in stadiums outside the United States where matches will be held.
