Mister Bavaria: The Man Behind the PSV Superfan

Anger and powerlessness dominate: ‘Twenty years and already ready’

PSV is the undisputed champion this season. Peter Bosz’s brigade went like the fire brigade and lost only once in the Eredivisie. It yielded a number of points of 91, a record in Eindhoven’s rich history. Reason enough for Voetbalzone to interview Mister Bavaria, as the alias of this super fan is, about the past season, the future, a moving report about a fellow PSV supporter and a program with (former) football players.

“I actually grew up on the Leidseplein, in the Jordaan. I drank from the Amstel. I walked from the Leidsestraat to the station. I got on the train there and I woke up in Eindhoven. I got a nice glass of Bavaria there. .I suddenly started acting normal and I said, ‘BUMP!’.”

The video is only 22 seconds long, but it is long enough to immediately make the PSV player in question a ratings cannon. On April 23, 2023, PSV has just won 3-0 against Ajax, when the Mierlose PSV supporter is interviewed on the street by the major social media platform 433. The video spreads like wildfire across the internet.

The famous interview

We can’t start the interview without briefly looking back on that moment. It is now more than a year later. When asked whether it was an action out of spontaneity, Mister Bavaria responds: “Yes, that was spontaneous. There is a story behind it. I have been at PSV for more than twenty years in Section K, which is diagonally behind the goal and next to me. there was a girl Britt Bakhuis, and she worked for 433. She really wanted to interview me, but when she did that interview she was a completely different person, she played a character. And I thought: I can do that too pretty well and the video has now been viewed millions of times.”

For the most part, Mister Bavaria received positive comments. “It’s an innocent joke that almost everyone can appreciate. I don’t hurt anyone. There is always a few people who react negatively to it, but the majority of Amsterdam also reacted positively.”

PSV

It should be clear: Mister Bavaria does not come from the Jordaan, but is a true PSV player through and through. And he was able to indulge himself at his beloved club last season. The Mierlo native has been a supporter of the Eindhoven team since he was a child and he says this is the best season he has experienced so far.

“From what I have consciously experienced, this is the best season. Of course 1988 was top, but I was four at the time. This season is extraordinary and we also had to be at our strongest, because Feyenoord was also razor sharp this season. One losing game in 34 competitions is simply great. I think it is a combination of several factors, but I think that the good balance between Peter Bosz, Earnest Stewart and Marcel Brands has laid the foundation for this team. It is a club with a top sports climate in a family style.”

Due to the good season, Mister Bavaria logically has difficulty highlighting one standout. In the end he came up with four names that he thought stood out last season. “In any case, Luuk de Jong. That man is so important in the dressing room and on the field. Not to mention that he is the best header in Europe, but he also started playing better football in the autumn of his career,” says the PSV supporter.

He then mentions Joey Veerman. The center of PSV’s midfield. According to him, the 25-year-old creative is indispensable in the team and in the matches that trainer Peter Bosz could not call on him due to an injury, the momentum was gone. Veerman missed five games in the Eredivisie this season, in three of which PSV lost points.

Jerdy Schouten and Sergiño Dest. At the former, Mister Bavaria appreciates his versatility, as he plays a brilliant role in the build-up both in midfield and in defense. According to the PSV player, Dest is an exceptional player for the Eredivisie.

Mister Bavaria is not afraid of slacking off. “No, I think that Peter Bosz will use this season as a benchmark and correct the mistakes he has made, but of course we also have to wait and see who will leave and it would be absurd if Bosz does it again. 34 games in the Eredivisie would be unique.”

It also promises to be an exciting summer at PSV. Players like Johan Bakayoko and Veerman are on the radar of many top European clubs. Mister Bavaria allows the former to leave Eindhoven for an amount between 60 and 75 million, while Veerman has to look closer to home, ideally with Borussia Dortmund.

Although the transfer market has not yet officially opened, the first blow has already been struck. Malik Tillman is permanently taken over by the Eindhoven team from Bayern Munich after a successful rental period. “I think Tillman really stayed because of the family atmosphere that prevails at PSV. He has felt at ease here.”

Feyenoord and Ajax

The two other clubs from the traditional top three will also be discussed. With an eye on next season, Mister Bavaria thinks that both Feyenoord and Ajax will continue to chase. “Feyenoord has actually done fantastic this year, but I think that was a great achievement of Arne Slot. I am curious to see how they will perform under a different trainer.”

“A lot really needs to be done at Ajax. On and off the field, but on the other hand: if Ajax pulls its purse strings and they get four or five direct reinforcements, then there is a formidable team,” the PSV player continues.

When asked whether the Mierlo native would still like to see players from Feyenoord and Ajax in Eindhoven, he responds: “I think Wellenreuther from Feyenoord is very good, PSV is also linked to that. But if Walter Benítez leaves, I would also like to see Joël Give Drommel the opportunity. At Ajax I would go for Jorrel Hato. He has so much talent and has worn the captain’s armband, and he is still malleable. Until recently I also mentioned Brobbey, but he dropped it after a recent interview for me,” Mister Bavaria refers to an interview by Brian Brobbey at the NOS Jeugdjournaal, in which he stated that he is extremely irritated when he plays against PSV.

Trapped in your body

In addition to a heart for PSV, Mister Bavaria also has a heart for justice. After a PSV home match he is approached by a man. His grandson suffered serious brain damage as a result of a violent car accident. As a result, the young man is limited in his functioning, has reduced consciousness and has been in a wheelchair since the accident.

The full video can be seen here.

Leandro, as the young man goes through life, was entitled to neurological rehabilitation for two years, but because the impact of the accident was so serious, the first year of recovery was mainly focused on physical recovery. As a result, Leandro and his family have lost a year of neurological treatment and the treatment has now been stopped completely and is no longer being paid out. While Leandro actually started making progress at the end of the two years in which he is entitled to neurological treatment.

Mister Bavaria recently visited the family to give the young man a nice day. There he was struck by how positive the family remains in life, despite serious setbacks, and enjoys the little moments.

“Leandro is trapped in his body and cannot communicate without a communication computer. This is not covered by insurance and it costs a lot of money. Leandro’s development is stalled by rules instead of looking at each person how such a neurological process should work. I want to commit myself to this and ensure that people like Leandro get the attention,” Mister Bavaria told Voetbalzone.

“Despite the fact that there is broad support from the medical community, neurological treatment must be individually tailored and is often a process that takes several years,” he continues. “I want to commit myself and ensure that people like Leandro get the attention.”

It simultaneously causes a lot of satisfaction and pain for the Mierlo resident. “I really want such a boy to be able to express himself through a speech computer. His development is now being denied, while with years of rehabilitation he does have a better future perspective. When I drove home with my cameraman, Levi Prince, I had a I didn’t say anything for half an hour, that’s how profound I find the story.”

From now on, a similar report will be published monthly on Mister Bavaria’s YouTube account, in which he wants to help people like Leandro and make their story known.

Padel with

At the end of the conversation, the positive Mister Bavaria came up with some news. He will soon launch the ‘Padellen met’ program with former footballer Tommie van der Leegte.

“Yes, that will be a two-part series that we will broadcast via a YouTube channel and Sportnieuws.nl. In it, I will play padel against former football players together with former footballer Tommie van der Leegte and we will talk afterwards in the canteen, in a light-hearted manner. , about football life. And not the standard questions, but here we want to look for the person behind the footballer. Did he ever climb out of the hotel window at the training camp? Those kinds of questions, in a funny way and of course with a Bavaria.”
