Mike James Named Euroleague MVP Despite Betclic Elite Ballot Loss

Beaten by TJ Shorts in the Betclic Elite ballot, Mike James will largely console himself with the Euroleague MVP trophy. The AS Monaco leader was acclaimed for the first time by fans, journalists, captains and coaches for his superb 2023-2024 European campaign. This is the first time that a C1 MVP has come from the French championship.

Leader of a Roca Team third in the regular season having broken its winning record (23-11) which failed just a few seconds short of a second qualification in a row for the Final Four, the American scored more than 10 points in all but one of his 39 matches this season.

A record season

Second best scorer (17.9 points) with one of his best 3-point percentages (37.2%) and seventh passer in the competition (5.1 offerings), Mike James was this season the third best player to rating (19.4 PIR) and the second to cause the most fouls in the entire league.

Above all, he became the best scorer of all time in the Euroleague by overtaking Vassilis Spanoulis on March 7.

The four-time member of the competition’s ideal five thus becomes the first American player to receive the MVP award since Anthony Parker in 2005 and 2006 with Maccabi Tel-Aviv. He succeeds Sasha Vezenkov (Olympiakos). He previously led the Euroleague in scoring during the 2018-2019 season with Milan.

Euroleague: Mathias Lessort and Mike James in the five majors of the season

The French pivot of Panathinaikos, Mathias Lessort, and the leader of the Roca Team, Mike James, were named among the major five for the 2023-2024 Euroleague season. Kendrick Nunn, Facundo Campazzo and Nigel Hayes-Davis complete this ideal five.
