Míchel: “We will continue to put Girona as high as possible”

Míchel couldn’t ask for anything more from his footballers. The team has overcome so much and magnified Girona’s history so much, that yesterday they let the players enjoy themselves on the pitch to close a dream season. Rarely has the manager been seen sitting on the bench with the rest of the coaching staff during games, but yesterday was an exceptional day. You just had to go with the flow and let the protagonists of the biggest thrashing in the First Division – with a 7-0 against Granada – have fun on the grass, accompanied by fans who once again sold out the Montilivi tickets.

It seemed that the work was already done, with the third place and the classification in the Champions League, but the people from Girona overcame more challenges: 81 points, 25 victories and Dovbyk pitxitxi. “Obviously, we only wanted to make the fans feel proud. It’s the main goal we have in every game. We also wanted to help Dovbyk in the fight for the little one. I’m happy because we got them both. I know that Granada’s situation is difficult, I put myself in their shoes. It’s a historic season for us, the players are incredible. Putting the final point from the celebration is the best. I hope everyone enjoyed it”, said the coach.

Míchel explained that “I’m feeling a bit down because a very good and important season is coming to an end”: “It’s been incredible. The dynamics of football say that it will not be the same players or the same season next year. We will miss players. We have to put the end point in a natural way. We will try to put the counter to zero and try to have a great season from tomorrow.”

Regarding the course, he assured that “we are all growing”: “It is difficult to normalize the season that this club has had because it is out of the ordinary. We feel that we are growing and we need to take steps forward. We need to rest and recover. The planning will be with the requirement to put Girona as high as possible».

“When the game started, I put one more reference (Stuani) so that he had more freedom and could score”, he acknowledged of the game plan.

The coach mentioned a flagship player of Girona, who has not been able to participate due to injuries. “Borja is special to me. For me it is unique and fits perfectly into the way I see football. I love him very much. I know it’s been a difficult season, but I’m sure we’ll all enjoy seeing him on the pitch.”

For his part, Granada coach José Ramón Sandoval did not attend the post-match press conference
