Meet the 36 Athletes of the IOC Refugee Olympic Team for Paris 2024: A Symbol of Resilience and Excellence

It’s official: 36 athletes will make up the IOC Refugee Olympic Team for Paris 2024, representing the global displaced population of more than 100 million people at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

The 36 athletes come from 11 different countries of origin and are currently hosted by 15 different National Olympic Committees. In Paris 2024 they will compete in 12 different sports: aquatics (swimming), athletics, badminton, boxing, breaking, canoeing (slalom and sprint), cycling (road), judo, shooting, taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling (freestyle and Greco-Roman) .

The president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, made the announcement on Thursday, May 2, at a ceremony held at the Olympic House in Lausanne, Switzerland. There he said: “We welcome you all with open arms. “You are an enrichment for our Olympic Community and for our societies.”

“With your participation in the Olympic Games, you will demonstrate the human potential for resilience and excellence. “This will send a message of hope to the more than 100 million displaced people around the world.”

The IOC Refugee Olympic Team is competing in the Olympic Games for the third time, following previous participations in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. This year, its head of mission will be Masomah Ali Zada, who competed as a member of the IOC Refugee Olympic Team. for Tokyo 2020.
