Paris Saint-Germain and European football, it is not a happy marriage. Since the Parisian club was taken over by the wealthy Qatar Sports Investments in 2011, there has been one main goal: winning the most important prize in club football, the Champions League.

The harvest after thirteen years and almost two billion euros in investments is impressive in itself: PSG has since won 10 national titles and 22 domestic cups. Only that one prize is missing: the Champions League. The quarter-finals were the final destination four times, the semi-finals twice and the final once.

This year too, it will not be possible to add the coveted ‘cup with the big ears’ to the trophy cabinet. In the semi-finals, PSG was eliminated by Borussia Dortmund. And that led to frustration among those involved.

Mbappe walks away

Star player Kylian Mbappé, signed for 180 million euros and probably in his last season at the club, showed his most mature side for a long time. “I should have scored first. I tried to help my team as best I could, but it wasn’t enough,” he told the assembled media.

But when asked which club he is cheering for in the other semi-final between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, Mbappe rolled his eyes before walking away resolutely.

The 25-year-old star player has long been associated with a move to Madrid and has now clearly had enough.

Chairman also angry

The chairman of PSG, the Qatari Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, stormed away angrily, just like Mbappé, when he was asked a question he did not like. After being asked whether the elimination meant that he was saying goodbye to trainer Luis Enrique, the frustration was visible on his face.

“What kind of question is this? Do you understand anything about football?” he snapped at the journalist before walking away.

Al-Khelaïfi thus seems to express his support for Enrique. The Spanish coach, who won the Champions League with Barcelona in the past, showed himself to be a worthy loser after the diptych with Dortmund.

“There is no consolation after such a defeat, two days of pain and suffering await us now. But such is life. It is important that you learn how to behave when you lose, because we are an example for many young children.”

Enrique took the blame. “There is only one person responsible, and that is the coach who makes the decisions. It would be unfair if people now question my players, because I am very proud of them.”
