Mathis Abline’s Performance Leads FC Nantes to Victory Against Brest

Nantes did not let itself approach without fighting back. In great form today, Mathis Abline did a lot of damage, particularly at the end of the first period, to the Brest defense, obtaining three scoring opportunities. But because of a lob off target, a single shot in front of the missed goal, and a shot into the stands, the young 21-year-old striker was unable to open the scoring while Brest was suffering.

The second period finally started in a very different way from the first. With far fewer chances on both sides, we ultimately saw a much more choppy second game, with many mistakes and more tired players. If there were 6 shots for Brest compared to 7 for Nantes in the first period, the second only allowed us to see 3 shots on the Breton side and 2 on the Canary side. Despite 70% possession, the Brestois ultimately never managed to break through this well-grouped defense, and above all well helped by voluntary attackers during the defensive phases.

The result is rather good for FC Nantes, which takes 14th place in the standings and 4 points over Metz, the championship play-off. Brest, however, leaves Monaco alone in second place in the standings, in addition to allowing Lille to seek third qualifying place for the group stages of the Champions League, Monday against OL.
